Data lineage is the recorded path from a source record to a finished number. It answers a question that sounds simple and usually is not: where exactly did this figure come from?
Full lineage records the source system and the extract it came from, the time window the data covers, the transformations applied, the version of the formula used, and the moment of computation.
With all of that stored, any value can be opened and walked backward to the individual records behind it. Without it, a metric is an assertion.
Metrics get challenged. A department head disputes their figure. An auditor asks how a control effectiveness rate was derived. A regulator asks for the basis of something reported eighteen months ago. A board member notices a trend break and asks what changed.
In each case the question is not really about the number. It is about the method. If the method cannot be produced, the number gets withdrawn, and the credibility of everything next to it drops with it.
This is where spreadsheet-based measurement fails hardest. The formula exists, but only inside a file that has been copied, edited, and re-saved by four people, and the source extract it depended on was overwritten last quarter.
Security stacks turn over. An EDR gets replaced, a scanner gets consolidated, a SIEM migrates.
If lineage is not recorded, the metric history silently splits at the migration date. The chart still draws a continuous line, which is worse than drawing nothing, because it invites comparison between two things that were never measured the same way.
