Continuous Control Monitoring (CCM)

Continuous control monitoring is the practice of testing whether a control is operating by checking it on an ongoing automated basis rather than sampling it once or twice a year. Instead of an auditor pulling twenty-five records each October, the check runs against the full population on a schedule.

What changes when testing goes continuous

Coverage goes from a sample to the population, which removes the argument about whether the sample was representative.

Detection time collapses. A control that stopped working in February gets caught in February rather than in the autumn fieldwork.

Evidence accumulates as a byproduct instead of being gathered in a scramble before the audit.

The failure record becomes a time series, which means you can see whether a control fails randomly or fails every month-end.

What CCM does not give you

CCM tells you whether individual controls are operating. It does not tell you how the security program is performing.

Those are different questions. A program can have a strong pass rate on automated tests while the parts of the operation that no control framework covers go unmeasured: whether the exercise programme ran, whether the budget bought what it was supposed to, whether the team is staffed for the load it carries, whether third parties closed what they committed to.

CCM also inherits the scope of the framework it tests against. Anything outside the framework is outside the picture by construction.

Volume becomes a liability

Continuous testing generates far more evidence than periodic testing, and most implementations underestimate what that means. Results have to be retained, tied to the version of the test that produced them, and reproducible months later when someone asks about a specific date.

Without that, the volume becomes a liability rather than an asset.

How Metric Maestro relates to CCM
